Our Story

{Mipla –Pidgin word meaning us, we or ours}

I was born and raised in Papua New Guinea. In PNG our culture is all about looking out for one another. It’s not something that is asked of us. Our parents don’t have to spell it out for us. We have an inherent sense of duty.

Multi-generational living arrangements are a big part of our lives. There is no Centrelink nor aged care facility. Collectively, the family cares for all family members; young and old. The way we treat our elders, with the love, respect, and care they deserve comes back to us in their blessing.

If someone in our family or community is taken to hospital unwell, we all take turns to be with them. Someone is with them around the clock, so they are not alone. If a loved one passes away, we sit with them. For weeks we sit and do our house crying. Or sorry business. Everybody has each other’s back; we cook, buy food and supplies and share. It’s ingrained in us, and it is simply what is done. Even those with very little means will contribute.

I started working in aged care and decided I could do more in the caring business so I completed my nurse training. When I began working in a hospital setting, I had no trouble connecting with people, even patients with many challenges.

I have a passion for giving back, making a difference, doing my part, replenishing nature, giving back to the world. I used that strength to start Mipla Care so I can continue doing what I love doing.
